One of the most common questions I get when families book a newborn session is: What should we wear? Whether your session is held in your home or in the studio, clothing plays a big role in creating timeless, beautiful images. As a newborn photographer serving Prosper, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Allen, and Dallas, I guide my clients through this process so it feels simple, stress-free, and confidence-boosting.
I always tell my clients to start by choosing mom’s outfit first. After giving birth, your body is healing, changing, and adjusting — and it is so important that you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful during your newborn session. When mom feels good, it shows in the images.
For both in-home and studio newborn sessions, I typically recommend a dress in a neutral tone for mom. Dresses photograph beautifully, allow for movement, and are often more forgiving postpartum. Soft neutrals like cream, beige, taupe, soft gray, or muted pastels are always a great choice. From there, you can build the rest of the family’s outfits around mom’s look.
Once mom’s outfit is selected, coordinating the rest of the family becomes much easier. I recommend sticking with soft, neutral, and muted tones that complement one another without being too matchy. Texture is always welcome — think knits, linen, or subtle layers — as it adds visual interest without distraction.
The color palette can depend heavily on whether your session is in-home or in-studio:
As a Plano newborn photographer and McKinney newborn photographer, I always take your environment into account when helping you plan outfits.
Parents are often relieved to hear this: you do not have to provide anything for your baby. I have wraps, blankets, and headbands for girls, and I can beautifully wrap your baby without any special clothing at all. Simple, cozy, and timeless is always my goal.
That said, if you want to bring something, I usually recommend:
There is never pressure to use everything you bring. We’ll choose what photographs best and what feels most natural for your baby.
The goal of a newborn session isn’t perfect outfits — it’s connection, joy, and storytelling. Clothing should support the moment, not distract from it. When everyone feels comfortable and confident, those genuine smiles, tender interactions, and quiet moments naturally shine through.
As a Prosper newborn photographer, Frisco newborn photographer, Allen newborn photographer, and Dallas newborn photographer, my goal is always to help families feel prepared and at ease before their session even begins.
If you’re expecting and planning a newborn session, I would love to help guide you every step of the way — from wardrobe planning to creating images you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
