One of the things I love most about in-home newborn photography sessions is how personal and meaningful they are.

The Best Rooms for an In-Home Newborn Session
When I photograph in-home newborn sessions, we typically focus on areas of the home with the best natural light.
Usually this includes:
- the master bedroom
- the living room
- the nursery
- or any room with a large window
Natural light is one of the most important parts of creating soft, timeless newborn photos. Especially for close-up images, we really want to utilize the largest windows available in your home.
And honestly, it does not matter if the room itself is “perfect.”
The light matters far more than the decor.
Sometimes we may photograph in a very simple corner of a room simply because the lighting is beautiful there.
You Do Not Need a Nursery for Beautiful Newborn Photos
One thing I always want parents to know is that you absolutely do not need to have a nursery completed in order to have beautiful newborn photos.
Many families have not finished their nursery by the time baby arrives, and that is completely okay.
Some families are:
- still decorating
- waiting on furniture
- sharing rooms
- moving soon
- or simply keeping things simple
Your session can still be absolutely beautiful.
However, if you do have a nursery prepared, it can be incredibly special to include it in your newborn session.
Why Nursery Photos Are So Meaningful
Nursery photos are especially wonderful if you are wanting to create a newborn album or heirloom artwork for your home.

Tips for Your Master Bedroom During Newborn Photos
One of the biggest tips I give clients before their in-home newborn session is to think about bedding colors in the master bedroom.
The master bed is often one of the primary locations we use because:
- it usually has great window light
- it allows for cozy family snuggles
- and it photographs beautifully for lifestyle newborn images
I always recommend using:
- neutral bedding
- soft whites
- creams
- beige tones
- muted earth tones
- light gray
- soft textures
Very bold bedding colors — especially bright royal blue, strong reds, or busy patterns — can sometimes pull attention away from your family and make the images feel darker or less timeless.
Many clients will:
- purchase a simple neutral duvet cover
- use a light blanket
- or temporarily style the bed more minimally for photos
It truly makes such a difference in helping your gallery feel soft, bright, and timeless.
Do Not Stress About Cleaning Your House
This may be one of the most important things I can tell new moms:
Please do not stress about having a perfectly clean home.
You just had a baby.
Your job is not to deep clean your house before your newborn session.
Even if the areas we plan to photograph are not completely clean, that is okay. We can easily move items around, tidy small spaces, or work around things during the session.
The purpose of an in-home newborn session is to create a stress-free experience.
I never want moms feeling overwhelmed trying to prepare their home immediately postpartum.
One of the Biggest Benefits of In-Home Newborn Photography
One of the reasons so many families choose in-home newborn sessions is because they are much more relaxed and flexible than studio sessions.
With studio photography, there is usually a limited booking window and a specific amount of time reserved.
But babies do not work on strict schedules.
During a newborn session, your baby may:
- need to eat multiple times
- need diaper changes frequently
- want extra snuggles
- need soothing
- or simply need breaks
And that is completely normal.
When I photograph in-home newborn sessions, I do not restrict the session based on tight timing. We simply move at your baby’s pace.
